Reading--
We are so excited to be starting our NONFICTION reading unit of study!
We will be reading around the room and the building as we learn about the genre of nonfiction. Our focus this week will be to learn about the details found in nonfiction books and we will work at noticing them as we read these factual books. We will learn how to take a "SNEAK PEEK" of a nonfiction book this week too! What an exciting time in reading class!

Writing / Grammar --
GRAMMAR TEST TUESDAY, OCTOBER 1st!
The review came home last Tuesday (9/24).
We will be using SOCRATIVE to review on Monday for this test -- please send your child to school with a
device, if they have one.
In writing workshop, we will be revising and publishing our small moment pieces this week. As we finish up the personal narrative unit, the students will
'fancy up' one of their pieces to share with their classmates later this week.
Phonics --
This week in phonics, we will be concentrating on capital letters and the correct use of capital letters in our writing.

Math --
Last Friday, your child received a blue test review over Addition and Place Value! Please have your child turn it in on Thursday (10/3).
We are having our math test over these concepts on October 8th!
In math, we are continuing to focus on different strategies that help us add two digit numbers. This week, we will be learning how to use base ten blocks to help us add. We will be focusing on how to regroup when adding. Count the number of ones in the ones place. “Do we have more than 9 ones? YES! Then we need to REGROUP.”
Here is a video of the strategy we have been using in class:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q45ntfLslC8&feature=youtu.be .
This video will help you understand the strategy and
understand the vocabulary we are using in class.
Later this week, we will also be exploring word problems that involve adding three addends. Students will be practicing all of our two digit addition strategies and reviewing our knowledge of place value for our upcoming test.

Students will share the items they brought from home with their classmates and have the opportunity to place their item on our word wall.
