Math --
In mathematics, we are beginning to learn new strategies to help us add two-digit numbers with and without regrouping.
Initially, we will use the hundreds chart, which is a familiar math tool from first grade, to help us add. During this time, we will focus on adding groups of tens first and then adding the value of the ones.
Later in the week, we will practice decomposing addends by place value to find the sums of similar problems. We will practice verbalizing our thinking by using math terms such as add, addend, sum and decompose.
Be sure to check your child’s math journal for examples of these problems!

Science--
In science, we will continue investigating the concept of matter, and classifying the matter around us into one of the three states: solids, liquids or gasses.
We will participate in a scavenger hunt around the school where we will find and take pictures of solids and liquids. The students will then work with a partner to create a pic collage containing their findings.
We will also discuss the physical property of texture. Students will share the items they bring from home with their peers as we learn texture words to describe different types of matter. We will continue to build our word wall over physical properties by adding examples of states of matter and texture.
Don’t forget:
Students should return their Ziploc baggie
with their texture item by Wednesday.
On the index card, please include the texture word and your child’s name!
